Breast Reduction

The breasts which are larger than normal result in serious problems both from the cosmetic and health aspects. Back pain, bra strap marks on the shoulders, rash under the breasts are seen due to breasts causing excess weight. Willing to stay away from sportive activities, difficulty in choosing clothes and the feeling of embarrassment make the condition of patient more difficult.

It is important to cease smoking at least 2-3 weeks before the surgery and to discontinue the use of drugs that slow down coagulation, such as aspirin, at least 1 week before the surgery. This is necessary to prevent the complications that may occur after the surgery (the most important complication is the inability of feeding of the nipple). It is important perform breast USG and mammography prior to for subsequent follow-ups of patient.

Although various techniques have been described from the technical point of view, a scar forms only around the nipple in one of the techniques I prefer, in the other technique I prefer, a scar forms around the nipple (circumareolar) and a scar extending vertically from the nipple to the lower part of the breast forms. The technique to be used depends on the shape and size of patient’s breast. Since too many scars form in the technique using reverse T incision, which was used very commonly in the past, it has now been abandoned to a large extent.

The nipple is brought its normal size and location, the breast is shaped by removing the breast tissue and excess skin. Drains (thin silicon tubes) are placed in each of the breasts to drain the blood accumulating inside. A bandage is applied. Patient is followed up with dressings. When the drainage is reduced, the drains are removed. If there are sutures to be removed, they are removed on the 7-15th days. After the bandage is opened, patient uses a special bra. After the surgery, it is possible to eminently reduce the visibility of the scars with the use of various pharmaceutical creams and laser technologies.

This is a functional surgery rather than a cosmetic surgery. Very large breasts may require minor touch-ups. We can say that the majority of the patients are very happy after the surgery. Because, first of all, the quality of life increases.
